Once again, St. Machar Academy embarked on the Rock Challenge competition.

Staff and pupils began working on the project in September 2009 and worked for six months to choreograh a routine, build the set, make the costumes and fundraise for the event.

On the 19th of February the cast of over 80  pupils and 10 staff members made their way to the AECC to compete with 12 schools from Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshireshire (Banff, Bucksburn, Ellon, Fraserburgh, Mackie, Kemnay, Mintlaw, Northfield, Peterhead, Torry, Turriff,  and Westhill Academies).

Pupils spent the day at the AECC rehearsing, watching the other schools rehearse, making new friends and watching the teachers dance on stage.

A brilliant day was had by all. After a late finish to the evening, the team left with the Grampian police award for set design, The Tega Award  for Lighting Design as well as awards for Community Support and  Positive Inclusion.

The top three places were awarded to Westhill (1st), Mackie (2nd) and St. Machar (3rd).

Quest for a king followed the story of An Egyptian Queen who returns from the dead searching for a King. She discovers that power and wealth mean nothing when it comes to true love. In the past, in the present and forevermore love must be given freely, it can never be taken by force.

Rock Challenge is an anti drug, anti smoking initiative, whch takes the form of a dance, drama and design competition. Through being involved pupils will learn to work together as part of a team, be creative, solve problems and lead healthier lives. Help us to be all that we can be.

St. Machar Academy’s Rock Challenge Team really needs your support. We must raise money to fund our entry into this competition.

We are planning fundraising events but we could use help with the following:

  • T-Shirt sponsors.
  • Transport for the Set, Props and Costumes to and from the venue.
  • Transport for pupils to and from the venue.
  • Costumes.
  • Set.
  • Water for our competition day.
  • Food for our competition day.
  • Make up/ Hair products.

We would be happy to send you a DVD of our last performance to help you appreciate the whole Rock Challenge initiative. If you prefer you can use the official website to give you more information.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that all pupils must bring their course books to their final exam.

A member of staff will be outside the exam hall and will collect your book. Pupils who do not return their books will have letters sent home requesting the return of the book or the money to purchase a replacement.

Study Club will run on a Monday and Thursday lunch time in Drama Studio 1.  Although this is aimed primarily at S4 pupils, pupils struggling with homework are also welcome.

This time will allow you to work on areas that you are struggling to understand and will allow you to attempt some past papers. Doing this will help you to identify what the questions are asking of you.
